Customizing the Studio panel
The Studio panel on the right ships with three stacked sections - Color, Palette, and Layers - plus the animation timeline along the bottom edge of the workspace and floating Reference + 3D preview windows over the canvas. Every one of these can be hidden, resized, or detached into a draggable floating window. The View menu pulls every layout control together; the per-section affordances are described below.
If anything ever gets stuck somewhere weird, View → Reset layout restores everything to defaults in one click.
Collapse a whole panel
Section titled “Collapse a whole panel”To give the canvas more room, you can collapse an entire side panel - the asset panel on the left or the Studio panel (Color / Palette / Layers) on the right - out of the way entirely.
Each panel has a small chevron tab on its inner edge, centered
vertically (the asset panel’s is on its right edge; the Studio
panel’s is on its left edge). Click it to collapse the panel; the
tab stays put and its arrow flips, so clicking it again brings the
panel back. You can also toggle either panel from View → Panels
or with Shift + [ (asset panel) and Shift + ] (Studio
panel).
The canvas fills the freed space automatically. Collapsing a panel is independent of hiding its individual sections - your section layout comes back exactly as you left it.
Show or hide a section
Section titled “Show or hide a section”Open the View menu and click the checkbox next to any section name. Hidden sections are removed from the panel - the slot disappears and sections below shift up. Re-enabling restores the section at its previously-set height + position.
Hide vs. collapse:
- Hide (View menu checkbox) removes the section from the panel entirely. Useful when you don’t use that section in your current workflow.
- Collapse (chevron in the section’s own header) keeps the section’s title row visible but tucks the body away. Useful when you want to reach the chevron again quickly without re-opening the View menu.
The two states persist independently - a hidden section can also be “collapsed” so when you re-show it, it lands in the collapsed state.
Resize a section
Section titled “Resize a section”A thin 4-pixel strip lives between each pair of adjacent visible sections. Hover the strip and the cursor flips to the row-resize arrows. Drag down to grow the section above; drag up to shrink it. The other sections adjust to keep the panel filled.
The animation timeline’s top edge works the same way - drag up to grow the timeline (the canvas region above absorbs the give), drag down to shrink it.
Double-click a resize handle to reset that section back to its natural content height. This is the only way back to “auto-sized” once you’ve dragged a section to a custom height. It matches the Photoshop divider convention.
The clamps:
- Each section has a sensible minimum + maximum so you can’t drag it into a useless sliver.
- Layers keeps a 150-pixel floor reserved so its action toolbar (Add / Duplicate / Delete) stays reachable even if you’ve grown Color and Palette to their maximum.
- The maximum is computed dynamically based on the panel’s current height - if you grow Color taller, Palette’s maximum shrinks to leave Layers its minimum, and vice versa.
Detach a section into a floating window
Section titled “Detach a section into a floating window”Each section header has a small pop-out icon next to the collapse chevron. Click it to detach that section into a draggable + resizable floating window over the canvas. Useful when you want:
- The Color picker right next to your brush strokes
- A wide Palette window so a 64-color palette fits in one row
- A tall Layers window while you scrub through 20+ layers
- Two panels visible at once on a wide display
While floating:
- Drag the title bar to move the window. The title bar always stays at least partially visible so you can drag it back if you park it near an edge and then the workspace resizes.
- Drag the bottom-right corner to resize.
- Click the dock-back icon in the floating window’s title bar to send the section back to the Studio panel. Its size + position in the float are preserved so you can pop it back out and pick up where you left off.
Floating sections share the canvas region with the existing Reference and 3D preview windows. Multiple floats can be open at once and they stack in click order (front-most goes to the top).
The minimum floating window width is 280 pixels - wide enough for a Layers row to show eye, lock, thumbnail, name, opacity slider, and blend-mode dropdown without truncation.
Reset everything
Section titled “Reset everything”View → Reset layout restores in one click:
- Every section’s visibility (back to shown)
- Every section’s collapse state (back to expanded)
- Every section’s height (back to natural / auto)
- Every section’s float state (back to docked) + float position
- float size
- Animation timeline visibility (back to hidden for single-frame assets) + height
- 3D preview hide state + dock state + position + size
- Reference window position + size + hide state
What it does NOT touch:
- Your grid color preference
- Your shape mode + rotation settings
- Your saved palettes
- Tour completion state (Reset layout won’t re-fire the welcome dialog)
