Pack files (.hexc)

A .hexc file is a complete, lossless copy of one pack - every asset, layer, frame, tag, face, palette, and color, exactly as it sits in the editor. Export one to keep a backup, send your work to someone else, or move a pack between computers. Importing it brings everything back the way it was.

Both exporting and importing .hexc files are free for everyone.

  • Back up your work. Your packs live in this browser. Clearing your browser’s storage erases them. A .hexc file on your disk is a safe copy you control.
  • Share a pack. Send a friend a .hexc file and they can import the whole pack and keep building on it.
  • Move between computers. Export on one machine, import on another - no account needed.

For automatic backups across your devices, see Cloud sync (a Pro feature). A .hexc file is the manual, take-it-anywhere alternative.

  1. Open the pack you want to export.
  2. In the top bar, open the File menu.
  3. Choose Export Pack File (.hexc)….

Your browser downloads a .hexc file named after the pack. It contains the active pack and all of its assets.

  1. In the editor’s top bar, open the File menu and choose Import Pack File (.hexc)… - or, from the pack browser, click Import Pack next to the New Pack button.
  2. Pick a .hexc file.
  3. Review the preview - the pack’s name, cover, and how many assets it has - then choose Import Pack.

Importing always creates a new pack. Your existing packs are left untouched, so importing is never destructive. After it finishes, the editor switches to the imported pack.

The free plan includes 1 pack with up to 8 assets. Importing a .hexc file counts against those limits:

  • If you already have a pack, importing another is a Pro feature.
  • If the file holds more than 8 assets, importing it is a Pro feature.

When an import would go over a limit, Hexcalibur shows an upgrade prompt instead of importing part of the pack - it’s all or nothing, so you never end up with a half-imported pack.

Pro removes both limits.

  • Tilemaps travel whole: a map’s tile arrangement survives the round-trip, still linked to the pack’s tiles after import.
  • A .hexc file isn’t tied to any account or plan. A file exported from a free account imports fine into a Pro account, and the other way around.
  • .hexc is for moving packs in and out of Hexcalibur. To get textures into a game or another tool, use Export instead.
